There is a difference between being on time and being in time. Being on time is coordination: the meeting, the train, the deadline. Being in time is orientation: knowing where you are inside the day, the season, the year. Most people are fluent in the first and have almost no instrument for the second.
The Present is an analog wall clock with a single hand that completes one revolution every 365.24 days, the length of Earth’s orbit around the Sun. It does not tell you the hour. It tells you where you are within the year, which is a way of being in time that the ordinary clock was never built to provide.
The clearest version of the idea is not that clocks are wrong, or that life should slow down. It is that one extraordinarily useful scale of time, seconds and minutes and hours, has quietly become the entire picture. The Present adds the scale that was missing.
